RüKONTOR (5. Etage), Rüttenscheider Str. 144, 45131 Essen

A talk with illustrations of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom, which shows the diversity of the various national traits, countryside and historic context in an endeavor to encapsulate what it is to be ‘British’.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) John Batty served in the British Army for 37 years. As a Royal Engineer he completed almost 18 years serving in the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) between the years 1964 to 1993. He retired from uniformed service in 2000, when he came to Germany as a civilian to work for British Forces Germany as the coordinator of a number of Christian voluntary organizations providing social welfare support to families and service personnel. He retired from full-time employment in 2014. He lives in Buende with his wife Doreen. His interests are Golf, Skiing, Choral Singing, the Arts and History. He is also active with the VHS Herford as a linguistic ‘Dozent’. Doreen and John have no plans (as yet) to return to the UK.
