Peter’s talk will address aspects of the past relationship between the UK and Germany. It will consider some of the reasons why the UK and Germany have had different attitudes towards the EU. It will speculate about prospects for the British-German relationship after Brexit. And it will suggest ways in which voluntary organisations like the British-German association and the Deutsch-Britische (or Deutsch-Englische) Gesellschaft can contribute to that relationship.

Peter Barnes is Chairman of the British-German Association (BGA), the British sister organisation of the Deutsch-Britische (Deutsch-Englische) Gesellschaft. Under his leadership, the BGA has increased and rejuvenated its membership, expanded and upgraded its events programme, begun to coordinate and consolidate the work of other UK-based voluntary organisations involved with Britain and Germany, and supported stronger political and diplomatic links between the UK and Germany.
Our lecturer has long-standing family connections with Germany. A great-great grandfather was the longest-serving British diplomat in nineteenth century Germany. A great-grandfather was the leading British historian of Germany in the early twentieth century. A grandmother sheltered and campaigned for German refugees in the UK during the 1930s. Peter himself spent both his summer holidays as a student in Germany, and has been a regular visitor to Germany ever since.
He was awarded First Class Honours for his Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford. He obtained an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Peter started his career in HM Treasury (The British Finance Ministry). He has subsequently worked at Morgan Stanley, Boston Consulting Group, as Ministerial Adviser in the British Welfare Ministry, and as Government Editor of The Economist.
