My lecture will consider the development of detective fiction from its earliest
beginnings in the stories of Edgar Allan Poe, through Conan Doyle and
Sherlock Holmes, G. K. Chesterton and Father Brown, and R. Austin
Freeman and Dr. Thorndyke. I will pay particular attention to the inter-War
period, the so-called Golden Age, when well-known names – Agatha Christie,
Dorothy L. Sayers, Margery Allingham, John Dickson Carr – flourished. The
famous Detection Club of London and its fostering of ‘the game’ element of
the genre will also be examined. And, finally, how the plots, and plotters, of
yesteryear still influence writers of today.

Dr. John Curran is the author of Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks and
Agatha Christie’s Murder in the Making. He worked with Britain’s National
Trust during the renovation of Greenway House, Agatha Christie’s Devon
home, and helped to set up the Christie Archive. He was awarded his PhD
from Trinity College Dublin, where he lives.
