This talk will explore the relationships and connections between Katherine Mansfield and various people connected to the Bloomsbury Group, in particular, with two of the twentieth century’s most famous English writers, D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. Mansfield and her husband, John Middleton Murry, like D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda, were never really part of the ‘Bloomsbury’ proper. Mansfield was a colonial with a father in trade, albeit Chairman of the Bank of New Zealand. Murry was a scholarship boy from very lower middle class Peckham, and Lawrence’s father had been a miner. But being literary and bohemian, their lives inevitably crossed with the Bloomsbury Group and friendships were formed – and broken. By the time Mansfield had met Woolf at the end of 1916 and the two writers started meeting regularly, Mansfield was already ill, though unaware she had tuberculosis until 1918, a disease that would kill her just 5 years later at the age of 34. Mansfield then began her nomadic journeying in search of a suitable climate and as a result she was hardly ever in London after 1918, and inevitably links and friendships dwindled as her health deteriorated. Nevertheless, some early friendships would prove important, not just to the individuals involved, but more importantly, to twentieth-century literary history, as Gerri Kimber shall demonstrate.

Gerri Kimber is a Visiting Professor in the Department of English at the University of Northampton and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She studied for her BA Hons at the University of Birmingham and her PhD at the University of Exeter. Her research focus has two main strands: early-twentieth-century literary modernism, and in particular Katherine Mansfield and the Bloomsbury Group, and post-colonial studies, particularly the literature of New Zealand and Aotearoa. She is co-editor of Katherine Mansfield Studies, the annual yearbook of the Kathrine Mansfield Society. She is the author of three books on Kathrine Mansfield, the latest “Katherine Mansfield: The Early Years” published in 2016. Gerri Kimber is also co-editor of numerous further books on Mansfield and the Serious Editor of the 4-volume Edinburgh Edition of the Collected Works of Katherine Mansfield (2012-16). – As Gerri Kimber is Chair of the International Kathrine Mansfield Society, she has co-organised numerous Mansfield conferences and events. Due to her international reputation as a Mansfield scholar, Gerri has made several media appearances on national radio and television in both New Zealand and the UK.
